Twig Talk – Report to Members – February 2020

Here’s an update on twig activities for the past month:

• The Wolfville Editors’ Bunch continues to meet monthly for lunch. Many thanks to Julie Cochrane for organizing those.
• Halifax-area editors have been meeting monthly since October 2019 — we might be on a roll at last!
• Keep an eye out for announcements regarding lunch meetings in your email (check your spam folder) and on our Facebook page (Editors in the Maritimes).

On January 18 we hosted a free info session, Tax Tips for Freelancers, presented by CPA Andrew Murphy, at the Alderney library. There was a good turnout, which generated a lot of questions and discussion. We’d like to put on more things like this – give us your suggestions as to what you’d be interested in seeing. We have a few ideas bubbling away on the back burner. And we have the tech tools to include members who aren’t in Halifax.

Trivia Night
Freeman’s in Fairview (3671 Dutch Village Road) hosts Trivia Night every Wednesday, starting at 7pm. Co-coordinator Jamie Serran is a regular and invites interested members to join her in making up a killer team of polymaths! Drop us a line via the twig email ( if you’re interested.

Coming up
• Our twig AGM will be held Saturday, May 9, 2020. Location to be determined.
• The 2020 national conference is scheduled for June 19–21 in Montreal. If you attended last year’s conference here in Halifax, you’ll know it’s a great event.

AllNovaScotia ad
In an effort to raise the profile of our organization, as well as promote our list of
editors-for-hire, we placed an ad in the local business & politics online news site The two-part ad ran for 10 alternating days from February 3 to 28, and linked to the home page of our website. Analytics show that during the first week the ad appeared, there was a total of 80 page views, including 27 first-time hits and 12 returning hits. The numbers lessened over subsequent weeks, but activity was always higher on the days the ad appeared. As far as we know, two people were contacted for potential work as a result of the ad. By comparison, analytics for the previous year show zero new visitors to our website, so we can safely say the ads at least generated some attention.
