Twig Talk – December 2020

Congratulations to Antigonish twig member Nicola Aquino on being Editors Canada’s featured volunteer for December! Nicola co-administers the Editors’ Vine that meets online monthly. Find out more about Nicola from our December 16 Facebook posting.

A warm welcome to our newest member, Margo Wheaton, and to Sue MacLeod, who recently transferred from Quebec. Both are in Halifax.

Margo’s timing is good (!) because Editors Canada fees are going up. But considering all of this year’s shuffling, we’re thankful/amazed that it’s only a $6 increase. A one-year membership will now be $298, a two-year membership will be $566, students will pay $56, and emeritus fees will be $149.

On December 12, our twig hosted a social get-together on Zoom on the theme of
Gratitude as a Business Model. A lively discussion unrolled about local vendors and how we write to them, either real letters or e-cards. Some folks receive gifts and others send them. This is clearly Nicola Aquino’s lucky month, as she was the winner of the random draw of this cool book! She’ll be well-armed for any upcoming trivia battles.

Coming up
On Friday, January 22, 10:00 am–12:00 pm, CRA representative Charbel Saab will be re-offering an online presentation on preparing for tax season, which was originally given on November 25. Let us know if you’re planning to attend and we’ll send you the link.

Saturday, February 27: Raya Morrison will be talking to us about applying editing and quality assurance techniques to web material for increased accessibility. Raya is co-chair of Editors Toronto and editor-in-chief of Blood & Bourbon Press. Details of these events will be forthcoming.

Editors’ Vine
The Vine’s topic for December 3 and 5 was Gifts for Editors, a discussion of resources and tools editors find useful (and might also like to give or receive as gifts). The topic for January 7 and 9 will be Making Smart Choices, presented by national executive council treasurer Michelle Weitzman, and Jess Shulman of Editors Toronto.
Visit the members’ area for the schedule of upcoming meetings. If you would like to be added to the Vine’s participant list to receive login details for meetings, or if you’d just like more information, please email the Vine moderators, Nicola Aquino and Lenore Hietkamp.

Let us know your thoughts and ideas. Contributions are welcome. Shoot us an email any time at novascotia.twig@editors.ca. Keep an eye on your email (be sure to check your spam folder) and on our Facebook page, Editors in the Maritimes, for announcements regarding lunches, meetings and other goings-on. Engage in conversation on the Facebook pages Editors’ Association of Earth and Business + Professional Development for Editors, as well as Editors/Réviseurs Canada and Editors Canada Student Affiliates.

And with that, your twig co-coordinators Becky Skillin and Margo Grant would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy and restful holiday, and all the best for a new & improved 2021!
