Editors Atlantic Monthly Report to Members
Twig Talk – May 2022
TWIG NEWS
- We’re pleased to welcome our newest member, Melanie Pitman, in West Porters Lake, NS.
TWIG WEBSITE UPDATE
- We are delighted to announce that after months of work with website designer Marsha Amanova of Rising Tide Creative, the new Editors Atlantic website is live at www.editorsatlantic.ca! We want to thank you all for your input, support, and patience, and we hope that the new website will be a useful tool for you.
- To access the Members area, which includes Twig Talks, upcoming events, the recording of the recent AGM, and more, use the password “Lighthouse“.
- If you have not yet submitted an editor bio and wish to do so, or if you would like to update your bio, you are still able to do so now that the website is live. Based on the bios we received, we have added “manuscript evaluation” as an editorial service. If you would like to submit or update your bio, let us know and we’ll help you out.
- Finally, we’d like to acknowledge that this website would not have been possible without the wonderful website committee and all of their hard work. Thank you to Patti Simmons, Alex Peace, Andrew Wetmore, Sue MacLeod, and Molly Rookwood for bringing this website to life. And, of course, a huge thank you to Marsha, who did a marvellous job and was a delight to work with over this entire process.
- If you have any questions or concerns about the new website, feel free to contact us.
MEETINGS
- The Wolfville Editors’ Bunch met via Zoom on April 19 for a casual visit. Their next meeting will be Tuesday, May 17 at 1:00 pm Atlantic time (1:30 in NL). We think this regular gig is a great thing and encourage members in other parts of the twig to do the same. We are more than happy to facilitate.
- We held our twig AGM on April 23 via Zoom. We were happy to see some new members, as well as a few folks interested in possibly joining the organization. In addition to business and chat, we drew three door prizes; the winners of Editing Canadian English, 3rd Edition were Camille Croteau and Karen Clare, both in PEI, and lucky Sherry Leclerc in Sydney, NS, won the draw for a free Editors Canada webinar.
- You can watch the recording of the Atlantic Twig AGM 2022 (enter Passcode: vt2Ds.X1).
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Unfortunately, we had to postpone our April 26 presentation, Editing Marketing Content with Margaret MacQuarrie. We hope to re-schedule her presentation for the fall, after our summer hiatus.
- On Wednesday May 11, longtime New Brunswick twig member Shelley Egan will be presenting on punctuation—we can always use a refresher, can’t we? RSVP to us at atlantic@editors.ca to get the Zoom link.
- On Wednesday, June 8, Halifax graphic designer Peggy Issenman will be presenting on the designer-editor relationship. Peggy’s many years of experience include book design for McGill-Queen’s University Press. If you’re interested in attending, email us at atlantic@editors.ca for the link.
NATIONAL NEWS
- The online Editors Canada national conference—Editing for a Changing World—is fast approaching on May 28–29, 2022. With over 40 speakers presenting on a wide range of topics, the conference is sure to offer education, enlightenment, and even entertainment!
- Editors Canada is offering professional liability insurance to members through APOLLO Insurance. See more details.
- LAST CALL: Editors Canada is seeking members to become local ambassadors for our national association, particularly members who live on the East Coast. You will be provided with a generic presentation to tailor to your own experience, as well as details about Editors Canada you can include. As an ambassador, you’ll help to promote lasting awareness of the editing profession.
- They’re looking for members with some work experience and a willingness to share their enthusiasm for the profession to act as ambassadors and suggested contacts at libraries, writers’ circles or post-secondary institutions.
- If you’re able to help, please get in touch with Merel Elsinga. If being an association ambassador isn’t your jam, there are many volunteer roles to choose from. Select an activity that will provide you with the skills, experiences, and opportunities you want to gain. To find a volunteer opportunity, contact the chair of the volunteer management committee. You can also search the volunteer directory.
- Has anyone achieved certification, received professional recognition, or published a book? Shoot us an email with announcements to share. We want to hear from you.
- Keep an eye on your email (be sure to check your spam folder) and on our Facebook page for announcements regarding lunches, meetings, presentations, and other goings-on.
